Spillmanville has been alive with pleasure these past few days. We have accepted the fact that we are no longer dealing with children, and that the world is ours. Things in the studio are starting to feel familiar again. I don't really see any of the time spent in there as wasted time anymore. Every little sketch that I have been doing to motivate my moves have been evolving into something tangible.
A friend of mine dumped off a huge box of vinyl paper the other day. I was kinda perplexed about all this paper, as it's surface is not the most appealing for what I do. The walls in the drawing studio have been unpainted since I moved in there, and the powder from the dry wall tends to get on everyone when they lean back against the walls. I decided to wallpaper the studio with this vinyl paper as a quick fix to my unfinished wall problem. As the day progressed, I found myself drawing all over them. I have about 2 boxes of sharpies laying around that I took when I cleaned out my classroom last week. It just kinda made since to start utilizing my wall space to jot down sketches, quotes, and what not as the studio sessions move along. When I was closing shop yesterday, I noticed that my visitors had been writing me messages on these walls when I wasn't paying attention to them. See, now the studio is interactive.
I recently sold a "flower" painting that has been in the bar for a bit now, and the new owner came to pick it up yesterday. Now there is an empty space above the couch. So yesterday, I grabbed a canvas and a sketch that I had drawn over coffee that morning, and then began drawing it out onto canvas. My cousin dropped by to watch the Bayern Munchen game, and we warmed up the painting studio. I got down to the business of mixing black from my primary colors, and the rest just fell into place.
The painting will more than likely stay black, but it is in the underpainting stage right now. Once the value is added and the shadows are popping, the painting will have a deeper feel to it. It was also suggested that I give the sitting bird a cocktail umbrella to break up some more negative space. I will do this today. Thanks for the suggestion.
So here's the agenda for Spillmanville Wednesday: shadows, umbrellas, new drawing on paper starting, happy hour and Liverpool soccer this afternoon. Tonight cocktails and Christmas lights. Gotta love the holidays.
Enjoy,
Spillmanville loves space heaters and hoodies.
